Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-935HD HVR 935HD High performance Hybrid USB TV tuner for DVB-T/T2/C, PAL and NTSC

I love this tuner. I found it a breeze to install. All I needed to do was connect it to a USB port with a USB extension cable, connect the tuner to the coaxial cable, and type the link in my browser (Firefox) from the yellow piece of paper, that comes with the tuner, with the activation key for WinTV 10, to download WinTV10. Then I ran the installer by right-clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator" to install both the device driver and WinTV10, entering the activation code when prompted. In addition to WinTV 10, I also use a 3rd-party TV tuner software entitled SichboPVR.

Even though I mainly used my sound system in analog mode (Creative Labs Sound Blaster X3 USB Receiver/DAC + Logitech Z906 1,000W THX-Certified 5.1 speakers), so that I can use Bass Redirection, with a crossover frequency of 100Hz and Virtual Surround (only applies to stereo sources and doesn't interfere with 5.1 playback). In the WinTV settings, there is a setting entitled "Use 5.1 Audio on SPDIF". Ticking that option is needed to achieve 5.1 audio with analog speakers too, or you only get stereo sound on all channels. I do have an optical cable going between the Sound Blaster X3 and the Z906, for Dolby Digital 5.1 (utilizing Dolby Digital Live), but encoded digital audio can't achieve features like Bass Redirection/LFE Gain/Virtual Surround/Crystality/Smart Volume/Dialogue Plus, from the Acoustic Engine/Playback settings in the Creative App, and in Australia only 3 TV stations support surround sound (Channel 9 HD, Channel 9 Gem HD, and Channel 10 HD), but they only output 5.0 surround, so I need Bass Redirection enabled, or the TV sounds flat when there is no bass. I don't use Dolby Digital Live for TV, as there is no bass. The other HD channels in Australia either use Dolby Digital stereo (7 HD, 7Mate HD) or MPEG1 Stereo (ABC HD, SBS HD), and all our other channels are all SD (720x480) utilizing MPEG1 stereo with AAC audio descriptions. So I only use Digital Audio on DVDs and Blu-Rays that use Dolby Digital 5.1, and use analog for everything else, as SPDIF can only do stereo sound with an optical if not using Dolby Digital Live, due to bandwidth restrictions on fiber optics, and the Z906 speakers do not support HDMI audio, which is required to playback uncompressed digital Audio, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio).

This is my second Hauppage WinTV-HVR-935HD, as the first one I bought (also from PB Tech) was fried when my TV antenna was directly struck by lightning when a severe storm hit.

I have owned two Hauppauge tuners. The previous one was a PCI bus card; this one is USB. In both cases, the hardware has been superb; the installed *user* instructions have been adequate; but the installation instructions have been a nightmare. I am a computer professional so was able to hack my way through to success. I shudder to think what a normal skilled computer user but *not* a professional would go through. One has the feeling that the installation instructions were create by the electronics engineers to designed and built the hardware. Anyway, it is, indeed, an excellent product - the usage instructions are adequate if not very smooth. It is only the installation - for both Hauppauge products - that is poor.
